First research activities on Digital Ecosystems within WP3
Date:
11/12/2008
In the context of the activities carried out within WP3, the team from LSE started a research dialogue with the team from UNGS in November 3-7, 2008. The purpose of the research mission was two-fold. At the theoretical level, the objective was to promote the dialogue on how Digital Ecosystems (DE) research and principles fit the research agenda of the Instituto de Industria (IDEI) in UNGS in order to find research synergies. Whereas at the practical level, the aim was to enable discussions on how to develop a methodology to disseminate the DE concept to existing knowledge-intensive sectors in
Accordingly, several discussion meetings between the LSE and the UNGS, as well as meetings with regional stakeholders in academia and public bodies to discuss dissemination matters, were organized.
In the document section of the EULAKS website a draft paper by Lorena Rivera and Paolo Dini on “Digital Ecosystems in the EULAKS project: Research context and strategies for the introduction of the DE concept at the regional level” is available for download.
The paper provides a summary of past outputs and current activities of social science research on DEs within the context of EU-funded research, drawing special attention to the DBE and OPAALS projects.
DE research aims to inform and support the process through which sustainable socio-economic development policies are defined and implemented.
What is thus the role of Social Sciences in the Digital Business Ecosystem and in EU integrated projects? What is the commensurability between social sciences, computing, and natural sciences? The DBE and OPAALS projects try to respond to the deeply interdisciplinary character of DE research in a way to also elaborate a social science research agenda for DE research.
Contributions of social sciences are needed to bridge DE research to regional sustainable development, and to translate DE research in something of clear policy relevance.
In the paper some tools, methods and methodologies from Digital Ecosystem Projects are presented.
