PILAS Conference 2010 on “Whose Latin America?” and Call for Papers!

Date:
08/04/2010

The PILAS Conference 2010 on “Whose Latin America? Shifting Perspectives on a Diverse Region”  takes place at the University of Manchester on 15th – 17th of June 2010.

Students are invited to submit abstracts on ANY ASPECT of their research within the field of Latin American Studies for PILAS 2010.

PILAS also welcomes papers that engage with the conference’s main theme, “Whose Latin America? Shifting Perspectives on a Diverse Region.”  Discourses on Latin America in the past have tended towards homogenised conceptualisations of Latin America. With this conference PILAR aims to look beyond conventional approaches to the region. “Whose Latin America?” asks postgraduate researchers to question: Who can speak for Latin America and its people? Who currently stakes a claim to Latin America and is this claim justified? What kinds of representations of Latin America does our own research produce? And how can our work contribute to widening perspectives on Latin America? As well as highlighting the cultural uniqueness of its different regions, their historical interrelatedness shall be acknowledged and  the colonial legacies with which Latin American countries still struggle analyzed.

Papers from across all disciplines are welcomed.

To submit an abstract of a paper (up to 250 words), please fill in the “Paper Proposal” section of the Conference Registration form (available via the PILAS website) and send the completed form as an attachment to pilasconference@gmail.com by 15 April 2010.

Attending this conference is FREE to all participants. Postgraduate students who do not wish to present a paper are warmly invited to attend and partake in discussion.
